Statement
My art comments on American Modernism by recontextualizing constructs involving race, history, masculinity, and religion. The work is informed by mythology, pop-culture, and other biographical elements. I use different mediums such as ink, collage, graphite, and wood assemblage. Formal elements of the work include traditional illustrations techniques and repurposed grounds. The use of illustrative hatch marks is consistent through the work.
This current body of work analyzes religious and social constructs. The viewpoints of the work are both personal and objective. The artwork is informed by Christian history and biographical experiences. Recontextualized Christian motifs and modernist semi-abstract compositions construct the imagery.
The figures that reoccur throughout multiple pieces have particular importance from a biographical standpoint. For example, the visage of a hulking templar acts as a metaphor for the stereotypical Christian zealot who dwells in the south. The presence of self-portrait aspects in some of the figures shows the personal narrative tied to the compositions. The ground choices for collage moments are made based on conceptual and formal elements. The allusion to faith as a doorway and an aging construct is illustrated by the use of repurposed doors with crumbling white paint.
